Fifteen years after the catastrophic Second Impact, humanity faces extinction from powerful beings called Angels. The secretive organization NERV, headed by the cold Gendou Ikari, combats them using giant bio-machines called Evangelions. Gendou's emotionally scarred son, 14-year-old Shinji, returns to Tokyo-3 and becomes the pilot of Evangelion Unit-01. Despite deep trauma from abandonment and neglect, Shinji battles the Angels under immense psychological strain, unaware of his father's sinister ulterior motives.
